About Us

Our Story: A Home for Irish Culture in Britain

Who We Are...

Comhaltas in Britain is a vibrant, volunteer-led community dedicated to the heart of Irish tradition: its music, dance, language, and song.

Since 1957, we have been the bridge between heritage and home for thousands of people across England, Scotland, and Wales. As a registered charity in England and Wales (1185729) and a registered charity in Scotland (SC053265), our mission is simple: to ensure that the beauty of Irish culture isn't just remembered, but lived and shared by everyone.

What We Do (and Why You’ll Love It)

Whether you have Irish roots or simply a love for traditional arts, our doors are open. We believe that culture is at its best when it's shared across generations.

  • Learning Together: With over 20 branches nationwide, our volunteers host weekly music classes in community centers, churches, and music schools.

  • A Creative Community: We serve approximately 1,800 members, fostering creativity and cultural exploration for all ages—from children picking up their first whistle to adults returning to an instrument.

  • Celebration in Action: Through lively performances, workshops, and regional festivals (Fleadhanna), we enrich local communities and keep the spirit of Ireland thriving in Britain.

Celebrating 75 Years of Tradition

While our work in Britain began in the 1950s, we are proud to be part of a massive global legacy. Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (simply known as ‘Comhaltas’) was established in 1951 to safeguard the soul of Irish tradition. This year, we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Comhaltas. What began as a small, passionate movement in Ireland has blossomed into a global network. By joining a local branch in Britain, you become part of a worldwide family that has been nurturing Ireland's cultural heritage for three-quarters of a century.
