Get ready to pick up an instrument and make some music! From 8th–11th October 2026, four Comhaltas branches across Britain are taking part in Music for All’s Learn to Play Day, offering a weekend filled with musical discovery, tradition, and lifelong connections.

Following the success of previous years, this year’s event is bigger than ever. As a charity dedicated to promoting traditional Irish music, culture, and social connection, Comhaltas shares a deep alignment with Music for All’s core mission: making music accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or ability.

The Power of Music Making & Connection

Music for All’s research highlights what we in the traditional music community experience every day—that active music-making enriches lives in profound ways:

  • Mental Health & Wellbeing: Playing an instrument reduces stress, anxiety, and depression while boosting overall mood. A UK study of over 7,000 adults confirms that active music-making directly correlates with higher life satisfaction.

  • Belonging & Connection: Joining a local Comhaltas branch means becoming part of a extended, welcoming family. It breaks down social isolation, builds lasting friendships, and provides a uplifting sense of shared identity and belonging.

  • Learning & Cognitive Growth: Learning music enhances language skills, memory, concentration, and attainment at any stage of life.

  • Healthy Ageing: Music supports memory, communication, and overall quality of life, offering vital cognitive benefits including support for people living with dementia.

Whether you are picking up an instrument for the first time or returning to a past passion, these taster sessions offer a supportive, pressure-free space to experience these mental health benefits firsthand.
