Over the past ten days, traditional music notes have been ringing out right across the country as candidates took part in the SCT Graded Irish Music Exams.

These unique, specialist traditional music exams offer a fantastic platform for musicians to test their skills. The vast majority of our candidates sat their exams face-to-face with an examiner who specialises in Irish traditional music, making it a truly authentic and rewarding experience.

A Massive Thank You!

An undertaking of this scale doesn't just happen. We want to extend a massive thank you to:

  • The Teachers & Parents: Thank you for the endless hours of practice, encouragement, and preparation you put into helping these candidates shine.

  • Our Volunteers: A huge shout-out to everyone who stepped up to steward on exam days. Your time and dedication kept everything running smoothly!

More Than Just a Test: Nurturing Complete Musicians

One of the most rewarding parts of the past week has been hearing the incredible, positive feedback from the candidates themselves. Many have shared just how much the SCT syllabus has inspired them to look beyond the standard tunes they usually practise for competitions.

The ultimate goal of the SCT exams is to nurture well-rounded musicians. The syllabus challenges students to dive deeper into the tradition by exploring:

  • Session Repertoires: Learning the tunes that keep the heartbeat of traditional sessions alive.

  • Music Theory & Aural Skills: Developing a sharp ear and a foundational understanding of the music.

  • Musical History & Context: As part of the musical knowledge section, candidates are encouraged to listen to prominent traditional players, classic albums, and live performances.

Looking to the Future

This marks only the second year that the SCT exams have taken place across Britain. Up until now, most exams have been hosted within local Comhaltas branch settings. However, we have big plans for the future!

Moving forward, our goal is to establish multiple dedicated exam centres across the province to make the process even more accessible.

Anyone Can Get Involved:

  • Open to All: These exams are open to musicians of all ages and skill levels—you do not even need to be a member of Comhaltas to take part.

  • Online Options Available: If you live in an area without a local branch nearby, do not worry. There is a fully flexible online exam option, ensuring that absolutely everyone has the opportunity to get involved.

Want to Learn More?

Whether you are a student looking to benchmark your progress, a teacher wanting to introduce the syllabus to your students, or you are just curious about how it all works, we would love to hear from you.
